Der Legende nach wurde hier Gregor der Erleuchter, durch dessen Wirken Armenien im Jahr 301 als erstes Land das Welt das Christentum als offizielle Religion annahm, für 13 Jahre durch König Trdat (Tiridates) III. von Armenien gefangengehalten. Durch Katholikos Nerses III., „den Erbauer“, wurde im Jahr 642 eine Kapelle zur Verehrung des heiligen Gergor erbaut. Über die Jahrhunderte wurde das Bauwerk wiederholt erneuert. Die heutige Form stammt aus dem Jahr 1662. Kloster Chor Virap spielt eine bedeutende Rolle im armenischen Nationalbewusstsein. Dies ist die zum Berg Ararat nächstgelegenen Stelle auf armenischem Gebiet. Der Ararat, der Nationalberg der Armenier, der auch im Wappen Armeniens abgebildet ist, liegt seit 1921 auf türkischem Staatsgebiet.
